Foreign Employee Sentenced in China for Espionage; FM Responds
On July 16, during a routine press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian addressed a sensitive legal matter involving a Japanese national.

Earlier that day, the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court sentenced a male employee of a Japanese pharmaceutical company to three years and six months in prison on charges of espionage. The Japanese government expressed strong regret over the ruling and urged China to release the individual promptly.
In response, Lin Jian emphasized:
"China is a country governed by the rule of law. The judicial authorities handle cases strictly in accordance with the law, ensuring the legal rights of all parties involved. We also provide necessary facilitation for Japan's consular functions in line with international conventions and the China-Japan consular agreement."
He further reiterated China's consistent support for China-Japan economic and trade cooperation, noting that the Chinese government is committed to maintaining a favorable environment for Japanese companies and personnel operating in China.
"We welcome foreign enterprises to conduct economic and trade activities in China. For all foreign nationals living or working in China, as long as they respect our laws and conduct themselves accordingly, there is no cause for concern," Lin concluded.
