A conspiracy theory suggesting that Labubu, a popular Chinese plush toy, is possessed by a demon has gone viral, leading some fans to burn their dolls.
The character, designed by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, is known for its unique look, which has inspired the theory. Some users on non-Chinese social media platforms have linked Labubu with Pazuzu, an ancient Mesopotamian demon traced back to folklore from the first millennium BCE. Pazuzu is depicted as having the face of a lion or a dog and exceptionally bulging eyes, and a circulating cartoon drawing shows the demon smiling, its pointy teeth on display, resembling Labubu.
This has led to warnings about the potential risk of possession by the demon if one keeps their Labubu dolls. One person from overseas even burned their doll and shared the video online. Kasing Lung, Labubu's creator, previously explained that the character was inspired by ancient European elf legends.

The toys gained worldwide popularity after Lisa, a member of the K-pop group Blackpink, expressed her love for it, leading to a surge in demand and prices. The character has become so popular that its products are frequently sold out. An average Labubu blind box, priced at 99 yuan (US$14), sells for hundreds of yuan in the second-hand market. The hidden version, which is extremely rare in a series, can fetch over 2,000 yuan.
The creator, Kasing Lung, has not publicly addressed the claims but has previously stated that Labubu is inspired by European fairy tales he enjoyed as a child. Despite the lack of physical resemblance between Labubu and Pazuzu, a viral AI-generated image comparing Labubu to Pazuzu has deepened the frenzy. The fact-checking website Snopes has debunked the resemblance, stating there is "no evidence" of any connection between Labubu and Pazuzu. Even Britannica notes that Pazuzu was often considered a protective figure in mythology, used in amulets to ward off evil rather than embody it.
