According to the announcement, Shunde District has reported a local outbreak of Chikungunya Fever, primarily transmitted by the Aedes albopictus mosquito, also known as the "tiger mosquito." The risk of infection continues to rise, making mosquito control an essential and effective method to prevent further spread.

The primary focus will be on eliminating mosquito breeding sites and killing adult mosquitoes.

Key Guidelines for Residents

1. Indoor Sanitation

Eliminate Water-Holding Plants: Remove aquatic plants and avoid using saucers under flower pots, which can hold water.

Clean Areas Prone to Water Accumulation: Promptly clean places where water can accumulate indoors, such as washing machine trays, sinks, mop basins, floor drains, window wells, kitchen sinks, and vase trays.

Comprehensive Cleaning Action: Carry out a thorough cleaning to remove any accumulated garbage or stagnant water that may serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

2. Outdoor Sanitation Efforts

Yard Hygiene: Clean up garden areas by flipping over pots and containers, eliminating discarded objects, and blocking tree holes or stone cracks. Any unused containers should be turned upside down.

Check Water Accumulation: Remove stagnant water and debris from water basins, pots, barrels, and buckets found around the house, balcony, and garden.

Clean Rooftops and Terraces: Check for and clear any water containers or debris from rooftops and terraces, ensuring no water is left standing. If containers are needed, they should be covered tightly.

Inspect Drains: After heavy rain, areas such as rooftops and balconies are prone to water accumulation due to blocked drainage systems. Residents are urged to inspect and clear any blockages.

Check for Water Puddles: Fill in low-lying areas where water may collect, and inspect toys, plastic bags, tires, water troughs, broken pottery, and other items for stagnant water.

3. Personal and Family Protection

Install Mosquito Screens: Ensure that windows and doors are fitted with mosquito nets or screens, and keep them closed. Sleeping under a mosquito net at night is highly recommended.

Use Mosquito Repellents: Utilize certified insecticides to kill mosquitoes either by spraying or using fumigation devices.

Outdoor Mosquito Protection: When going outside, especially in areas with a known risk of mosquito-borne diseases, wear protective clothing and apply insect repellent. Those traveling abroad should stay informed of any mosquito-related health risks in their destination areas and take necessary precautions. If symptoms like fever, rash, or joint pain occur, it is critical to seek medical attention immediately.

On July 15, the Shunde District Health Bureau reported the first local outbreak of Chikungunya Fever, which was linked to an imported case detected on July 8. As of July 15, a total of 478 confirmed cases have been reported.
