CHIANG MAI – A 24-year-old Chinese man, missing since early July, was found dead in Chiang Mai on Monday evening, reportedly murdered by fellow Chinese nationals who had abducted him and demanded a 3-million-baht ransom.

The victim, identified as "Mr. Yang," was discovered wrapped in plastic and a bedsheet along a roadside in Ban Pang Haew, Mae Rim district. Police were alerted by his older sister, who reported his disappearance.

Yang had entered Thailand from Laos on July 8, crossing into Chiang Rai province from a special economic zone.

He was accompanied by another Chinese man, Hukang. Two days later, Hukang called Yang's sister to inform her of the abduction and ransom demand.

Authorities located Hukang at a Chiang Mai hotel and arrested him for entering the country illegally.

He claimed he too had been kidnapped and had paid 1.5 million baht to secure his release.

According to him, two Chinese nationals, Xang and Wang, had persuaded him to bring Yang to a restaurant on Nimmanhaemin Road under the pretense of a business meeting.

Later, they were taken to a rented house in Hang Dong district, where they spent the night.

Hukang said he woke up tied up, with a knife held to him and a ransom demanded.

After transferring the money, he was moved to another room where he discovered Yang had already been killed.

He stated the two men then placed Yang's body in a vehicle and dumped it by the roadside before releasing him near the hotel.

Police arrested Xang on July 11 in Hang Dong district and searched the rented property, where they found significant blood stains.

Xang claimed that Wang had killed Yang with a hammer before fleeing the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
