Affected Areas and Case Severity
The confirmed cases are primarily concentrated in the towns of Lecun, Beijiao, and Chenchun. Fortunately, all reported cases so far have been mild, with no severe or fatal outcomes.
What Is Chikungunya Fever?
Chikungunya fever is an acute infectious disease caused by the Chikungunya virus, similar to dengue fever in both symptoms and transmission. It is primarily spread by Aedes mosquitoes (commonly known as "tiger mosquitoes"). Infected individuals typically experience symptoms 3 to 7 days post-infection, including fever, joint pain, rash, and sometimes headache, muscle pain, nausea, and fatigue.
Seasonal Risk & Prevention
With the ongoing hot and rainy season, mosquito activity is at its peak. Authorities warn that this is a high-risk period for mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and Chikungunya.
Public Health Recommendations:
Eliminate stagnant water: Turn over plant pots, cover water containers, and clean up debris.
Use mosquito repellents and nets: Equip homes with mosquito screens and wear long-sleeved clothing outdoors.
Seek medical attention: If symptoms occur, consult a medical facility promptly and disclose any recent travel or mosquito exposure.
Dr. Bai Honglian, Head of Infectious Disease at Foshan First People's Hospital, emphasizes, "Timely medical consultation and strict mosquito control are key to stopping the spread."
