A VIP lounge at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport has stirred controversy by enforcing a rule that requires visitors to prove they have assets worth at least 20 million yuan (US$2.8 million) to gain entry, a move the lounge says is designed to "ensure the quality of service."

On July 17, a Chinese netizen, a member of China Merchants Bank's "Golden Sunflower" program, inquired about accessing the international First Class Lounge at the airport. She was told that she would need to provide proof of assets amounting to at least 20 million yuan, a requirement that does not include property and vehicles.

The individual, who had purchased an economy class ticket, expressed her surprise and confusion at the threshold, questioning why someone with such wealth would use reward points for lounge access instead of simply buying a business-class ticket.

The lounge access is typically a perk for Golden Sunflower cardholders, who are required to maintain an average monthly balance of at least 500,000 yuan (US$70,000). Airport staff clarified that first or business class ticket holders can access the lounge directly, or individuals can pay 600 yuan (US$85) for individual use. For China Merchants Bank cardholders, asset verification is necessary, and lounge access is by reservation only.

China Merchants Bank confirmed that this rule has been in effect since June 2024, sparking discussions on the practicality and fairness of such requirements.
