The Health Bureau of Shunde District in Foshan City, Guangdong Province, reported on July 15 that a locally transmitted outbreak of Chikungunya fever, caused by an imported case, was detected on July 8, 2025.
In response, local authorities swiftly mobilized professional teams to carry out comprehensive prevention and control measures. As of July 15, a total of 478 confirmed cases have been reported across the district, primarily in the towns of Lecong, Beijiao, and Chenchun. All reported cases are mild.
Chikungunya fever is an acute infectious disease caused by the chikungunya virus. It typically presents with symptoms such as fever, rash, and joint pain. Similar to dengue fever, it is mainly transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes (commonly known as tiger mosquitoes). Transmission can be interrupted by eliminating mosquito breeding sites and carrying out mosquito control efforts.
The current hot and rainy season has created favorable conditions for mosquito activity, marking a peak period for mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya.
Authorities urge the public to strengthen their awareness of disease prevention: regularly empty and clean containers that collect water, remove stagnant water and household clutter to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, and implement personal and household mosquito prevention measures to avoid bites. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, rash, or joint pain should seek medical attention promptly and inform healthcare providers of any recent travel history or mosquito exposure.
