Brace yourselves, Shanghai — the heat is rising once again. This weekend, the city sits on the edge of the subtropical high-pressure zone, bringing with it unstable atmospheric conditions and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms.

But come early next week, the subtropical high takes full control, setting the stage for a spell of intense heat and blazing sunshine. Daytime highs are expected to climb significantly, with temperatures peaking at 37 to 38°C by mid to late week.

This classic midsummer weather may also bring sudden, localized afternoon thunderstorms — the kind locals describe as "boiling water from the sky." These brief but intense downpours may offer little relief from the heat.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to take precautions against prolonged exposure, stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and ensure vulnerable populations — including children and the elderly — remain safe.

With Shanghai set to sizzle, it's time to stock up on sunscreen, hats, and cool drinks — summer is making itself known.
