As of this Saturday, Shanghai's extensive Metro system will welcome international bank cards and China's digital currency "hard wallet" for all rides, marking a significant step towards enhancing the city's appeal to foreign visitors and bolstering its economy.
This initiative, initially tested on the Shanghai Maglev, will now extend across the entire Metro network, including suburban rail lines. The move aligns with China's visa-free travel policy aimed at boosting tourism and making Shanghai a more business-friendly destination.
Foreign visitors can now use Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, or UnionPay cards at subway gates. These cards are also compatible with mobile payment apps. Additionally, travelers equipped with China's digital yuan hard wallets, such as cards and wearables, can utilize this payment method.
To facilitate seamless transactions, passengers must enable "no-password small payments" on their bank cards or apps and ensure sufficient funds or credit. In case of payment issues, riders can reach out to 24-hour hotlines or service centers; UnionPay's hotline is 95516, and the digital yuan hotline is 956196.
Shanghai's Metro, one of the world's largest, operates over 500 stations and 21 lines, covering nearly 900 kilometers and accounting for approximately 77 percent of the city's daily public transport. The expanded payment system is anticipated to simplify travel for tourists, granting them easier access to shopping areas, hotels, and cultural attractions.
The new payment options result from months of rigorous testing by Shanghai Metro, banks, and international credit card companies, with over 3,000 tests conducted to guarantee safety, speed, and user-friendliness. This upgrade is set to make Shanghai an even more accessible and attractive destination for global travelers.
