Sports journalist Dusty Garza shared on social media:
"According to multiple independent sources, "Victor Wembanyama is not only deeply interested in Shaolin culture, he had a master shave his head and is now beginning a 10-day retreat at that temple. His upcoming travel plans have been paused, and his entourage has already left."
On June 9, a reporter from Dahe Daily confirmed through a Shaolin Temple contact that Wembanyama is indeed staying at the temple. However, details of his visit remain private. NBA China's official website has also verified his presence at the temple.
About Wembanyama
Victor Wembanyama was born on January 4, 2004, in Le Chesnay, France. Standing at 2.26 meters (7'5"), he plays as a power forward and center for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA. Wembanyama is considered one of the most promising young talents in the league due to his exceptional height, agility, and basketball skills.
NBA and Shaolin: A History
Victor Wembanyama is not the first NBA player to visit the Shaolin Temple. In 2009, NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal visited the temple to explore Zen philosophy and martial arts. That same year, NBA star Devin Harris also made a stop at the Shaolin Temple.
Additionally, in 2016, Dwyane Wade visited the temple, where he lit incense at the Hall of Western Saints to pray for world peace and explored the Pagoda Forest, the burial site of generations of Shaolin monks.
Shaolin Temple is globally recognized as the birthplace of Chinese martial arts, especially renowned for its Shaolin Kung Fu. The temple and its martial arts have gained worldwide fame through iconic figures like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, as well as numerous films.
Shaolin Kung Fu represents extraordinary physical prowess, the mysterious traditions of Eastern martial arts, and profound spiritual insights.
In addition to immersing themselves in Eastern culture, "retreats" have become a method for sports stars to enhance their focus and mental toughness. Many aim to experience or learn this spiritual discipline to strengthen their professional attitude and commitment to training.
