NBA sensation Victor Wembanyama, known for his impressive 7-foot-3 stature, has taken a unique path for recovery and reflection. The French basketball player is currently undergoing a 10-day retreat at a Chinese monastery, where he has been spotted with a shaved head, donning grey robes, and engaging in prayer and physical activities like running alongside a forest.
This retreat comes after Wembanyama's diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder in February, which abruptly ended his season. The San Antonio Spurs deemed it an 'isolated condition,' but the seriousness of the diagnosis cannot be understated. Deep vein thrombosis occurs when blood clots form in the deeper veins, potentially leading to a pulmonary embolism if the clots dislodge and travel to the lungs.
Typically treated with blood-thinning medication, this regimen usually sidelines players from contact sports like basketball due to the increased risk of bleeding. Wembanyama's injury was particularly disheartening as it followed his first All-Star Game appearance and a stellar rookie season where he was named the NBA's Rookie of the Year for 2023-24 and led the league in blocked shots.
His performance, averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks, and 3.7 assists, drew comparisons to basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was the last player to achieve such a feat in the 1975-76 season.
The Spurs are looking forward to Wembanyama's return, anticipating a stronger team dynamic, especially with potential additions like Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who are rumored to be considering San Antonio in their future plans. Wembanyama's time at the monastery reflects his commitment to recovery and personal growth, setting the stage for a potential comeback in the upcoming NBA season.
