A 35-year-old man from Sichuan Province, China, has chosen an unconventional path: leaving behind city life, employment, and marriage to live alone in a cave.
Min Hengcai, once a ride-hailing driver earning around 10,000 yuan (roughly USD $1,400) a month, decided in late 2021 to abandon his job. Burned out by the pressures of urban life and burdened with a 300,000 yuan (about USD $42,000) debt, he returned to his rural hometown.
There, he traded his family's land for a smaller plot that included a 50-square-meter cave. Min turned the cave into a modest home, where he now lives a minimalist lifestyle—growing his own food, walking, and reading.
He's been clear about his motivations: he believes working is meaningless and sees marriage as a waste of time and money, especially given the low odds of finding genuine love. "True love is hard to find," he said, adding that modern relationships often come with unrealistic expectations.
Min's story has gone viral on Chinese social media. While some applaud his rejection of materialism and societal pressure, others question his extreme withdrawal from society.
Despite the mixed reactions, Min appears content. For him, freedom and peace matter more than status or salary.
