Recently, Jinan, Shandong Province, issued its first social security card containing foreign workers' work permit information. 

This updated version of the social security card integrates several public service functions, including work permit information inquiry and verification, social security card services, medical treatment, transportation, tourism, and financial payments, making it more convenient for foreign nationals working and living in Jinan.

Notably, foreign workers can simultaneously receive both a physical social security card with work permit information and an electronic version. The electronic social security card can be accessed via an app, allowing users to query and download work permit information and verify it through a dynamic QR code in real-time.

At present, Qilu Bank is the first pilot bank to issue the updated social security cards with work permit information. All branches of Qilu Bank in the city are providing this service. Additionally, other partner banks for social security cards are actively working on integrating services to provide broader and more convenient options for foreign nationals as soon as possible.

What does the new social security card with work permit information look like?

The new social security card, which includes work permit information, is based on the third-generation standard card design in Jinan. It adds a "Work Permit Number" and reduces the "Card Number," incorporating a watermark with the unified logo of the "National Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs."

Who is eligible to apply for this card?

Foreign nationals who have never applied for a social security card in Jinan but have obtained work permit approval can apply for this new card. Foreign nationals who have already obtained a social security card in Jinan and have passed the work permit approval process can apply for a replacement card with the added work permit information.

How to apply for the new social security card with work permit information?

Foreign nationals working in Jinan who wish to apply for the new social security card must present their valid passport in person at any Qilu Bank branch in the city. The card can be issued immediately (appointments can be made in advance by calling Qilu Bank's hotline at 4006096588). In the future, other partner banks for social security cards will also gradually begin offering this service.

How to obtain the electronic social security card with work permit information?

1.After entering China, foreign nationals should download the electronic social security card app on their mobile phones.

2.They can register and log in using their name, work permit number, or social security number.

3.After successful identity verification, they will receive the electronic social security card with work permit information.

Once foreign nationals receive their physical social security cards, the electronic version will provide them with the same standard services.

‘You’re Asking for Trouble!’ Woman Faces Scan Fail at Airport

Recently, a video shot at Shanghai Pudong International Airport has sparked widespread debate on both Chinese and international social media platforms. 

The video shows a woman who, due to heavy makeup, failed to pass the airport's facial recognition system during security checks. Airport staff reportedly insisted that she remove her makeup on the spot until her appearance resembled her passport photo. According to the New York Post, the incident occurred in 2024, but the video has recently gone viral after being widely shared, climbing to trending status online.

In the video, the well-groomed woman stands in front of a facial recognition scanner, which struggles to recognize her due to her makeup. At this point, an airport employee intervenes, saying: "Wipe everything off until you look like your passport photo. Why would you do your makeup like that? You are asking for trouble." The  clip, which has accumulated thousands of views, shows the passenger removing layers of "bridal-level" makeup.

In the footage, the woman, holding a makeup wipe, slowly removes her makeup under the gaze of other passengers. Her face reddens, not from the rubbing, but from the embarrassment. While it remains unclear if she was eventually allowed to pass through security, the facial recognition system certainly didn't approve of her makeup. 

The video has sparked a wave of humorous responses on social media. One viewer commented, "It's not like she was able to walk around with a filter on in real life, right?" Another said, "This is cosplay, not just regular makeup."

Others, however, expressed sympathy for the woman, criticizing the airport official's behavior. One comment read, "Poor girl should not be laughed at. The guard hurt her feelings. Not nice and not funny." Some questioned whether makeup should even be a problem for modern facial recognition systems. "No matter how thick the makeup is, the face shouldn't be unrecognizable, right? Isn't it time to upgrade the equipment?" asked another user.

Not long ago, model influencer Janaina Prazeres was also held for 40 minutes by immigration officials who couldn't identify her surgically altered face.

Ms Prazeres, who Playboy Norway referred to as the "perfect woman," has spent about one million dollars on 20 cosmetic surgeries, including nose jobs, body lifts, and complete face "harmonisation," per The Post.
