The National Meteorological Centre issued an important weather alert on May 5, warning that a widespread heavy rainfall event will affect southern China from May 7 to 9.

The rainfall will be accompanied by short-term heavy downpours, thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail in some areas, increasing the risk of flash floods, geological disasters, and urban waterlogging.

According to forecasts, heavy to torrential rain is expected in the eastern part of Southwest China, most of the Jiangnan region, and South China, with extremely heavy rain in certain areas. The main period of impact will be during the day and night of May 8. The rainfall will mainly feature short-term heavy downpours and other severe convective weather.

Due to the precipitation, there is a high meteorological risk of geological disasters in parts of southeastern Guizhou, northern Guangxi, northern Guangdong, southwestern and eastern Hunan, and eastern and western Jiangxi, as well as western Fujian. There is also a high risk of flash floods in localized areas of northern Guangxi, eastern Hunan, and eastern and western Jiangxi. In addition, parts of Guangxi, Hunan, and Jiangxi face a high risk of urban flooding.

Meteorological experts advise that this round of heavy rainfall will be widespread, with intense precipitation in some areas and accompanied by severe convective weather. Secondary disasters may easily occur. The public is urged to stay updated with the latest local weather forecasts and warnings, and to take precautions when traveling, engaging in outdoor activities, or planning vacations.
