New Round of Heavy Rain Expected in Guangdong Starting the Night of May 8

A fresh wave of heavy rainfall is forecast to impact Guangdong Province beginning the night of May 8, primarily targeting northern Guangdong and the northern-central part of the Pearl River Delta.

Authorities from the Guangdong Meteorological Service have issued alerts, noting that areas expected to receive significant rain on May 9 and 10 largely overlap with regions already affected by recent heavy precipitation. As a result, there is an elevated risk of secondary disasters such as flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and falling rocks. Local residents are advised to take precautionary measures.

Key Weather Highlights:

  • Timing: The most intense rainfall is expected during the daytime hours of May 9–10.

  • Affected Areas: Northern Guangdong and much of the Pearl River Delta will bear the brunt.

  • Hazards: Strong convective activity is anticipated, including thunderstorms, wind gusts of 8–10 on the Beaufort scale, and possible hail in isolated locations.

Regional Forecast:

  • May 8: Areas including Shaoguan, Qingyuan, and Zhaoqing will see conditions shift from cloudy to moderate or heavy rain, with localized downpours and thunderstorms bringing high winds and possible hail. Other regions may experience scattered showers and thunderstorms.

  • May 9: Widespread heavy to torrential rain is expected across northern Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta. Isolated spots could see exceptionally heavy rainfall.

  • May 10: Torrential downpours are expected in central and southern Pearl River Delta, as well as western and eastern Guangdong and Meizhou. Other areas may see periods of rain easing to showers.

  • May 11: Rain will taper off across the province, giving way to mostly cloudy or sunny conditions, with lingering showers in parts of western Guangdong.

Weather Outlook:

Seven-day forecasts for major cities like Guangzhou and Shenzhen show unsettled weather continuing in the short term, with a gradual return to clearer skies later in the week.
