What is 5G-A?

5G-A stands for 5G-Advanced, a significantly enhanced version of standard 5G. It delivers over 10 times the speed and capacity compared to early-stage 5G. With reduced latency and energy consumption, 5G-A is designed to shine in crowded environments like exhibitions, concerts, and city centers.

The Most Obvious Benefit: Speed

Download speeds are skyrocketing from gigabit (Gbps) to tens of gigabits, making it perfect for immersive experiences like XR (Extended Reality) and glasses-free 3D content.

Upload speeds are jumping from megabits to gigabits, enabling seamless cloud data transfer, widespread live streaming, and holographic interactions.

Beyond Speed: Smarter Connections

5G-A introduces powerful new capabilities:

Massive connectivity for both industrial use and passive IoT modules.
Ultra-precise location tracking with centimeter-level accuracy, a huge leap from 5G's meter-level performance.

Shanghai Leading the Charge

By 2026, Shanghai aims to become a "dual-10G city", combining 5G-A and 10G fiber broadband. Already, 40 5G-A base stations line a six-kilometer stretch through bustling commercial zones. The Huangpu River shipping lanes are also benefitting, with real-time ship tracking and smart navigation enabled by 5G-A.

At the same time, autonomous vehicle test zones in Pudong have rolled out fully verified 5G-A routes, and Yangpu District boasts the world's first 10G fiber "Cloud Broadband Community."

Will It Cost Extra?

Surprisingly, no. Major carriers confirm that 5G-A comes with no additional charges, and many popular phone models are already compatible—if you're in a supported area.

China Mobile has launched 5G-A in 100 pilot cities, aiming to expand to 300+ cities by year-end. Meanwhile, China Telecom and China Unicom are heavily investing in industrial trials and AI-based smart upgrades for their networks.
