On May 21, Lee's former assistant, known online as "Xiaopang," issued a public apology on social media:
"After being educated by public security authorities, I have come to realize that malicious editing, fabricating, and spreading false audio recordings of 'Ms. Li Kaixin defaming the Chinese people' constitutes illegal behavior. These actions have severely damaged her reputation. I hereby issue a formal clarification and sincerely apologize to @李凯馨Eleanor. I am deeply remorseful and promise never to repeat such behavior. I also urge the public to stop spreading these rumors and help maintain a clean online environment."
The statement quickly went viral, trending on Chinese social media platforms.
Shortly after, Eleanor Lee's studio released an official statement:
"In response to the recent spread of a false audio recording involving Ms. Li Kaixin, our studio filed an official report with the police on May 13, which has been accepted. Police investigations confirmed that the so-called 'Li Kaixin recording incident' was a fabrication by a former assistant due to personal disputes. This malicious rumor and the resulting public discourse have seriously infringed on Ms. Li's legal rights and caused significant negative social impact."
Eleanor Lee herself addressed the controversy:
"I was born in Taiwan, China, and returned to the mainland at the age of 16 to study and live. It's been ten years since. My stance and emotional connection to China have never wavered. I firmly uphold the One-China Principle and would never utter anything that insults China or its people. I sincerely apologize for occupying public attention with this incident. I kindly ask everyone to stop spreading false information. Thank you."
Previously, the ex-assistant had released a clip allegedly featuring Lee saying she "only came to China to make money," among other disparaging remarks about Chinese audiences. The clip fueled public outrage.
Following the controversy, Lee's promotional content was removed from the drama 《赴山海》's social channels. Her scenes were reportedly heavily edited, and her name omitted from official materials.
According to public information, Eleanor Lee was born on October 12, 1999, and is a Chinese-Singaporean actress and singer.
