Yang Qina, originally from Argentina, came to Changting in 2006 after marrying her Chinese husband. Over the years, she became not only a beloved member of the community but also a cultural ambassador. In 2022, she was appointed as an image spokesperson for the ancient city of Changting by the Guyun Tingzhou Cultural Tourism Group. She frequently appeared on national television, becoming a familiar face to many Chinese viewers.
The news of her sudden passing, announced via a verified Douyin account with 670,000 followers, quickly drew public attention and outpourings of grief. Despite her popularity, details surrounding her sudden hypoglycemia episode remain unclear, and further inquiries are being made by her family.
Understanding Hypoglycemia and Its Risks
Hypoglycemia refers to blood sugar levels falling below 3.9 mmol/L. When it drops below 2.8 mmol/L, even healthy individuals may begin to experience symptoms. Glucose is a vital source of energy for the body, particularly the brain and heart. A severe lack can cause cognitive impairment, motor incoordination, or even sudden cardiac death.
Though primarily seen in diabetic patients—especially those under insulin treatment—hypoglycemia can also be triggered by excessive alcohol, liver or kidney failure, or long periods without food. Even healthy individuals are at risk if they exercise on an empty stomach or follow extreme diets.
What To Do During Hypoglycemia
If a person is conscious and able to eat, immediate consumption of carbohydrates—such as glucose tablets or juice—is advised. Overeating sugar should be avoided to prevent a rebound spike in blood glucose. In severe cases, where the individual is unconscious or unable to eat, medical intervention with glucose infusion or glucagon injection is required.
Following an episode, identifying the cause is essential to prevent recurrence. Adjustments to diet, exercise routines, and medication may be necessary.
Prevention and Awareness
Manage underlying health conditions like diabetes and organ dysfunctions.
Avoid overly strict glucose control, especially in the elderly.
Refrain from alcohol consumption which disrupts glucose metabolism.
Monitor glucose levels before and after intense physical activity.
Carry glucose snacks and emergency ID cards if at risk.
Parents of at-risk children should inform schools and keep sugar on hand.
