This gold hotpot costs¥700K, but does it make food taste better?

A woman in southern China has stunned online viewers after sharing a video of herself eating hotpot from a luxury gold pot weighing 1kg and valued at 700,000 yuan (US$97,000). The woman, a gold wholesaler in Shuibei, Shenzhen's renowned gold and jewelry district, explained the pot was custom-made by a factory for a customer.

She told Dute News that the pot's value includes the cost of gold and processing fees, and that she filmed the video to showcase the unique item before delivery, having obtained the customer's permission. It was the first time she had seen a gold pot, with orders typically being for gold jewelry. She also mentioned receiving an order for a 500g golden durian.

Business at Shuibei, Shenzhen has been booming as gold prices surge, with some buying gold as an investment. A trend among young Chinese to craft their own jewelry from previously purchased gold bars has also emerged.

She expressed uncertainty about the customer's plans for the pot. As for the hotpot experience, she noted the gold pot's superior thermal conductivity but said the food tasted the same as when cooked in regular pots.
