In a bizarre real estate romance scheme, a woman in Shenzhen managed to dupe 36 men into buying apartments in a nearby city under the guise of dating them.
Identifying herself as Liu Jia, she convinced each man that she was his perfect girlfriend—sweet, caring, and marriage-minded. But there was a catch: before marriage, he had to buy a house.
Liu even chipped in 30,000 yuan (about $4,000) as a show of commitment, all while "strongly recommending" two specific residential blocks in Huizhou, about 90km away.
Once her victims signed the dotted line, she promptly ghosted them—blocking numbers, vanishing into thin air, and leaving them saddled with home loans.
One unlucky suitor, Atao, said he now pays 4,100 yuan ($560) per month for a place he never intended to live in while still covering rent in Shenzhen. "I dare not have a girlfriend now," he admitted.
The internet had a field day with the story, with one user joking that Liu should be crowned real estate agent of the year.
Others criticized the men for falling so easily for a month-long romance.
Whether Liu's dating-turned-sales strategy will land her in legal trouble remains unknown, but one thing's for sure—she played the long (or rather, short) game to perfection!
