The border controls of the Netherlands with Belgium and Germany will remain in place for a period of six months.
However, during this period, those crossing the border will not see much change, as there will only be standard checks of random cars, Schengen.News reports.
Back in November, when the decision to impose internal border checks was made, the Dutch Migration Minister, Marjolein Faber, said that this measure is aimed at tackling irregular migration.
The minister further noted that through the introduction of border controls, the Netherlands also wants to prevent people smuggling in a "concrete way.".
It is time to tackle irregular migration and migrant smuggling in a concrete way. That is why we will start reintroducing border controls.
Nonetheless, taking into account that the government has not increased the capacity of border police, some have expressed scepticism about the impact of this measure.
Most Borders of Netherlands With Belgium & Germany Will Be Unmanned
The Netherlands has more than 800 border crossings with Belgium and Germany. Since the number is very large, it is impossible for the Dutch authorities to deploy additional officers at each of these crossings.
The trade union for the Marechaussee, Marvel, said that they have managed to allocate another 50 officers to border crossings. This means that most of the border crossings between the Netherlands and its two Schengen neighbouring countries will remain unmanned despite the implementation of checks.
As NL Times explains, the Marechaussee will continue its practice of checking passengers in cars at random from mobile checkpoints. This means that there will be no traffic stops or boom gates.
To make sure that travellers do not face any inconvenience while crossing the border, they have been advised to carry their travel documents with them.
In an effort to help the Dutch officer speed up the process at border crossings, the German border police said that they intend to work together with their counterparts.
By working together, the German police said that they would be able to increase the chances of preventing the entry of individuals who do not meet the entry rules and carry out returns faster.
In addition to the above-mentioned, the German police said that depending on the flexibility in terms of time and locations, bilateral cooperation with the Dutch counterpart could also be extended to non-stationary controls.
