On December 17, the National Immigration Administration held a press conference on the relaxation and optimisation of the visa-free transit policy. On December 17, the National Immigration Administration of China announced a comprehensive expansion and optimization of the country's transit visa-free policy. Effective immediately, the allowed stay period for foreign nationals transiting through China without a visa has been extended from the previous 72 or 144 hours to 240 hours (10 days). Additionally, 21 new entry and exit ports have been added to the list of eligible transit points, and the areas where foreign nationals can stay and travel have been significantly expanded.
Under the new policy, eligible citizens from 54 countries, including Russia, Brazil, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, can transit through China en route to a third country (or region) without a visa. They can enter China via any of the 60 designated ports across 24 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. During their stay, they are allowed to travel within the specified areas for up to 240 hours. A key change from the previous 72-hour and 144-hour transit visa-free policies is the introduction of cross-regional travel. Foreign nationals transiting under the new policy can now move across different provinces within the 24 regions where the policy applies, offering significantly more flexibility for short-term visitors. According to the latest statistics, from January to November 2024, a total of 29.218 million foreign nationals entered China through various ports, marking an 86.2% increase compared to the same period last year. Among them, 17.446 million people entered the country using visa-free entry policies, reflecting a 123.3% year-on-year growth.
