In response to the World Health Organization's (WHO) declaration of mpox as a public health emergency of international concern, China's General Administration of Customs (GAC) has announced stricter port surveillance measures to prevent the disease's entry.
Travelers from mpox-affected areas exhibiting symptoms such as fever, headache, back pain, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, and rashes are required to declare their health conditions to customs officers upon arrival. The GAC will implement medical protocols and conduct necessary sampling tests as per established guidelines.
Additionally, all transport vehicles, containers, goods, and items from affected regions that may be contaminated will be subject to mandatory sanitary treatment following prescribed procedures.
These enhanced measures, effective from the announcement on Thursday, are set to last for six months. The GAC's swift action reflects China's commitment to safeguarding public health against the global spread of mpox.
As of August 9, data from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show 17,541 mpox cases across 13 African countries, resulting in 517 fatalities. The GAC's actions are critical in minimizing the risk of further global spread through international travel and trade routes.
