Plum Rain Ends July 4th: BUT Brace for 6 Days of Heat Up to 38°C!

Shanghai is poised to exit its annual plum rain season by July 4th, heralding a scorching week ahead with temperatures expected to soar to extreme highs of 37 to 38°C, following an official announcement by local weather authorities.

Transition from Plum Rain to Heatwave

In the lead-up to this climatic shift, the weakening of the plum rain belt on July 2nd and 3rd will increase temperatures across the city, though scattered thunderstorms may still occur. As the subtropical high-pressure system strengthens, Shanghai will officially mark the end of its plum rain season on July 4th, setting the stage for about six consecutive days of intense heat.

Upcoming Weather Patterns

From July 2nd to 3rd, as the subtropical high-pressure system expands westward and northward, the city will experience a noticeable rise in temperatures, potentially reaching around 35°C. Concurrently, the Shanghai Meteorological Center issued a yellow high-temperature warning at 12:09 PM today, with the previous blue wind warning still in effect.

In addition to taking precautions against heat, afternoon and nighttime thunderstorms on these days could bring significant rain, warranting vigilance for local heavy downpours.

Post-July 4th Outlook

Following the departure of the plum rain season, Shanghai will predominantly see sunny or partly cloudy skies with a continuation of high temperatures for about six days. The extreme temperatures could hit 37 to 38°C.

Given the high temperatures and unstable atmospheric conditions, localized thunderstorms may occur in the afternoons. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and warnings.

2024 Plum Rain Season Recap

This year's plum rain season was notably typical, starting on June 19th with the rain belt firmly entrenched over the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. 2. Frequent Severe Rainstorms: During this period, the urban area witnessed eight significant rainfall events, with two instances of heavy rain (exceeding 50 mm per day) contributing to a cumulative 174.0 mm—half of the total seasonal rainfall. Additionally, five instances of moderate to heavy rain (exceeding 25 mm per day) summed up to 256.6 mm, accounting for over 70% of the seasonal total.

The most intense rainfall occurred between June 28th and 30th at the Xujiahui station, recording 123.3 mm.

3. Uneven Rain Distribution: Rainfall was primarily concentrated in the central and northwestern parts of the city. The southern areas like Songjiang, Jinshan, and Fengxian received less rain.
