Foreign Entries to China Surge by 152.7% in the First Half of 2024: NIA

The National Immigration Administration today released the main data on immigration management activities for the first half of 2024.

A spokesperson for the National Immigration Administration reported that in the first half of the year, 14.635 million foreign nationals entered China through various ports, marking a 152.7% increase compared to the same period last year. Among these, 8.542 million entries were through visa-free access, accounting for 58% of the total and showing a 190.1% increase from the previous year. The administration anticipates that the trend of foreigners coming to China will continue to rise in the latter half of the year.

In the first six months of the year, national immigration authorities in China have taken rigorous legal measures to combat crimes that hinder border management, while deepening the management of "three illegal" foreigners—those who enter, stay, or work in the country unlawfully.

During this period, authorities investigated 18,000 criminal cases related to border management violations, resulting in the arrest of over 34,000 suspects. Of these, criminal coercive measures were taken against approximately 29,000 individuals, while around 4,800 were subject to administrative sanctions. Additionally, law enforcement dismantled 105 transit and reception dens and seized 699 vehicles and vessels involved in these crimes.

In their ongoing efforts, authorities apprehended over 41,000 "three illegal" foreigners, with more than 10,000 of them being deported under legal circumstances. Drug enforcement also saw significant breakthroughs with 298 drug-related cases resolved and 379 individuals arrested, including 66 major cases involving over 10,000 grams each, and a total of 4.8 tons of various drugs confiscated.

Further, strict crackdowns were enforced on illegal activities such as firearms and explosives smuggling in border areas. This resulted in the seizure of 786 firearms, 26,000 bullets, and smuggled goods valued at 640 million yuan, all contributing to the safeguarding of national border security and the regulation of normal immigration and emigration processes.
