Shanghai Police Debunk Stabbing Incident Rumors at Zhongshan Park
Amid circulating online rumors of a stabbing incident at Zhongshan Park in Shanghai, authorities have clarified the situation, confirming that no such attack took place.
This clarification comes in the wake of a genuine knife attack on Shanghai Metro Line 9 at Hechuan Road Station on the morning of June 19, which resulted in injuries to three individuals. The suspect in that incident, Shen, a 54-year-old male, was swiftly apprehended by the authorities.
Following this incident, rumors began to spread online about a similar stabbing event at Zhongshan Park. According to the official Weibo account "Police and Citizen Direct Link - Changning," these rumors were entirely fabricated. The verification process revealed that the police were, in fact, apprehending a suspect involved in theft outside a supermarket near Zhongshan Park. There was no knife attack as suggested by the rumors.
The Shanghai Public Security Bureau's Urban Rail and Bus Police Division also issued a statement on their official Weibo account "@Railway110," detailing the incident and its resolution.
The investigation found that two marketing personnel, Tao (female, 31) and Gao (female, 46), were responsible for spreading the false information. Tao observed plainclothes officers arresting a theft suspect near Zhongshan Park on the afternoon of June 19 and decided to fabricate a story about a knife attack to attract attention to her brand. She posted the false information online, causing public panic and significant social disturbance. Tao has been administratively detained by the police.
Similarly, Gao created and disseminated a fake video of a metro stabbing incident on the morning of June 19, using AI software to generate misleading content. Her actions aimed to increase followers and attention for her social media account. Gao has also been administratively detained by the authorities.
