Shanghai's Plum Rain Expected to Ease After July 2

As of June 27, Shanghai has been predominantly experiencing showers throughout the day, with a significant rainfall event expected tonight. The local weather is not just wet but intense, featuring heavy to torrential rains accompanied by thunder, lightning, and gusty winds from thunderstorms. This pattern is set to continue until July 2, during which the city has been under the influence of consistent precipitation.

However, relief is on the horizon. Before July 2, Shanghai will continue to see persistent rainfall. After this date, as the subtropical high pressure system lifts northward, the city will experience afternoon thunderstorms with temperatures potentially nearing 35°C. Following July 2, with the subtropical high extending westward and continuing to move north, the center of heavy rainfall will shift towards the area near the Huai River. As a result, Shanghai will predominantly experience afternoon thunderstorms.

The 'Plum Rain', known in Chinese as '梅雨'(Méiyǔ), typically affects Shanghai during the early summer months. This seasonal weather phenomenon is characterized by prolonged periods of rain and is named after the season during which plums ripen. The plum rain season usually commences in early or mid-June and can last until early July, marking a critical phase in the region's agricultural calendar.

Historically, Shanghai's plum rain season can last from three to four weeks.
