As the East Asian monsoon shifts, Shanghai braces itself for the onset of the annual Plum Rain Season, forecasted to begin on June 19th this year. The Plum Rain, or 'Meiyu,' marks a period of continuous and often heavy rainfall across the Yangtze River region. According to the latest meteorological data, the atmospheric circulation over East Asia is adjusting, bringing the rain belt gradually from south of the Yangtze River to its middle and lower reaches.
Immediate Weather Changes
Starting tomorrow, Shanghai will see mostly cloudy skies during the day, with the night turning from cloudy to partly cloudy accompanied by occasional short-lived showers or thunderstorms. Early morning might also bring fog in suburban areas. The temperature is expected to hover between 23°C to 32°C, with a southeastern wind reaching levels 4 to 5. Humidity levels will fluctuate significantly from 95% to 45%.
Heavy Rainfall Warning
Residents are advised to take advantage of the relatively clear weather tomorrow to complete any pending laundry as the weather is set to deteriorate. From June 19th, the city will face significant rainfall, with accumulated rain expected to range between 40 to 60 millimeters generally, and reaching 80 to 100 millimeters in localized areas. The heaviest showers, characterized by thunder and strong wind gusts, are predicted during the daytime of June 19th and 20th, with hourly rain intensity peaking at 30 to 50 millimeters.
Throughout the Plum Rain period, the rain belt will persist over the middle and lower Yangtze River region, with multiple occurrences of heavy rainfall expected from June 21st to 26th.
Temperature and Humidity
Post the onset of the Plum Rain season, the temperature in Shanghai is likely to remain stable with extreme highs around 30°C and lows maintaining at about 25-26°C. The high humidity and temperature create a conducive environment for mold and mildew in homes and increase the propensity for food spoilage and skin diseases. Residents are advised to use air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and dryers to combat the dampness.
Precautionary Measures
With increased rainfall frequency and intensity, the Shanghai Meteorological Center anticipates higher than usual precipitation this season. It's essential to stay prepared:
Ensure food safety and hygiene as the humidity makes food spoilage more likely.
Wear breathable and quick-drying clothing to prevent skin diseases.
Keep living spaces moisture-free using air conditioners and dehumidifiers.
Eliminate stagnant water promptly to prevent mosquito breeding.
Always have rain gear at hand and be cautious about traffic safety during heavy rains.
Stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and warnings, and plan ventilation accordingly.
