Major Road Collapse in Shanghai's Pudong, Latest News
On June 21th, multiple residents reported to journalists that a significant road collapse occurred at the intersection of Zhangyang North Road and Huashan Road in Pudong New Area. In the afternoon, reporters arrived at the scene and observed that the entire road had been cordoned off. Relevant departments promptly handled the situation, erecting barriers and initiating emergency repairs. Fortunately, the swift response prevented any casualties or vehicle damage. Initial assessments suggest that the collapse may have been caused by issues with the sewage pipeline beneath the road.
Ms. Xie, a resident living near Zhangyang North Road, discovered the collapse around 9 a.m. when she stepped out of her house. She mentioned that this section of the road had previously been under repair. Her photos reveal a significant depression and collapse of the road surface, with considerable water accumulation in the sunken area and a noticeably bent pipeline nearby. Other citizens' photos showed several workers on-site, some holding umbrellas while assessing the situation.
Upon arriving at 5:45 p.m., reporters saw that the affected section of Zhangyang North Road, north of Huashan Road, was surrounded by barriers, and the road had been completely closed. Traffic heading south was being redirected to the left side of the road.
On June 21, reporters learned from relevant departments that the potential hazard had been detected as early as June 12. Precautionary barriers had been set up around the site. Preliminary assessments indicated that an issue with the sewage pipeline beneath the road caused a void, leading to abnormal subsidence. The pit has since been filled with yellow sand, and further repair work is being expedited. No injuries or vehicle damage occurred throughout the process.
According to the managing authorities, Zhangyang North Road is under district jurisdiction, maintained by the Pudong New Area Road Transport Center. Officials confirmed that on the afternoon of June 12, maintenance units under the center discovered subsidence on the northwest side of Zhangyang North Road and Huashan Road, measuring approximately 35 meters long and 16 meters wide. It was suspected that the issue was due to a problem with the sewage pipeline beneath the road, creating a void. The Road Transport Center immediately set up barriers and notified the district drainage center to verify the issue. Investigations revealed that the sewage pipeline had become disjointed, prompting the Pudong New Area Drainage Center to commence emergency repairs.
On June 13, temporary drainage measures were implemented. After drafting an initial repair plan and collecting necessary information, a construction plan was developed, and preparations were made for on-site work. However, due to heavy rain, the road collapse occurred suddenly around 8 a.m. on June 21. The construction team promptly filled the area with yellow sand, with the filling expected to be completed tonight. Tomorrow, the team will proceed with grouting and pouring concrete, aiming to complete the entire repair project within the week.
