92 International Students Expelled
On November 29, Wuhan University issued the decision on the expulsion of 92 international students. They stated that in order to maintain the discipline and teaching order of the university, according to the relevant regulations, 92 international students who have not registered within the specified time limit, have not fulfilled the registration procedures and do not participate in the student activities specified by the university, without asking for leave, will be expelled. These students are from more than ten countries, including undergraduates, postgraduates and non-degree students. The main reasons include poor grades, violation of school discipline, or failure to pay tuition fees as required.
"As of now, the expulsion of 92 international students has been completed." said Mo, deputy director of Admissions Office of Wuhan University International College. Per Mo, as early as a year ago, these students were warned. After repeatedly communications in vain, it ended up this way.
Not the First Time in History
This is not the first time that Wuhan University has dismissed overseas students. As early as November 6, 2017, the university once dismissed 34 foreign students, including undergraduates and postgraduates. Mo revealed that there were relatively more expelled students this year, in response to the requirements of the Ministry of Education for strict management of international students.
It is reported that Wuhan University has 3300 international students from 120 countries and regions. According to the regulations, the thesis writing and defense of overseas students are the same as those of Chinese students in principle, and students who fail to pay tuition fees as per the regulations will not be registered. If the total truancy is more than 20 classes, international students shall be given a warning, or a serious warning, or a demerit recording or even expulsion according to the seriousness of the case.
Assimilating on Management of Chinese and Foreign Students
Since 2019, some students of several universities, including Chinese nationality and foreign nationality, have been expelled from school successively.
In June this year, two doctoral students from the school of Marxism of Tsinghua University were expelled for being on leave without approval.
In November this year, Fudan University expelled 12 graduate students, 9 of whom were international students, for the reason that "they did not meet the requirements for graduation at the end of their study years".
In November this year, Yanbian University announced the decision to expel 136 graduate students due to "exceeding the maximum years of study". Some of them have not graduated from the University for nearly 15 years.
It is understood that in 2017, the Ministry of Education published the Administrative Measures for the Enrollment and Cultivation of International Students by Schools, and in 2018 issued the Quality Standards for Higher Education of Overseas Students in China (for Trial Implementation), which is a national unified basic standard formulated and implemented for higher education of overseas students in China. To promote the assimilation of Chinese and foreign students in teaching, management and service is an important part of the standard.
