Living Temporarily in China? You Need to Register Your Address

In accordance with Chinese regulations, foreign residents living in their own apartment or under the roof of someone elses must be registered at the nearest police station or other service centers within 24 hours upon arriving in China, while foreigners living in a hotel can register directly at their hotel reception. If the person fails to process accommodation registration shall be given a warning and may also be fined no more than RMB 2000 yuan in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China.

Heres the list of the documents youll need to provide:

For first time:

  1. Passport (original and photocopy of the passport photo page, current visa and the latest entry stamp)

  2. One photo (2 inches)

  3. Lease contract (original and photocopy)

  4. Any other relevant documents (eg. work certificate, birth certificate for foreign infants, etc.)

Renewal:

1. passport

2. related files to support the renewal (eg. new lease contract for changing the address)

Unless you are staying in a hotel(register in the hotel reception), there are three ways you can go about registering your address in China(includes staying with friends or family):

1. Go to the nearest police station in your neighborhood;

2. Register at an expat service center, which you can find with a quick online search based on your location;

3. Follow your local expat service subscription account on WeChat and register online (Shenzhen resident can follow this account: nsfs110).

Traditionally, foreign residents would always need to go to the police station to register their address, but with the recent launch of the self-registration process via the Internet and WeChat on October 25, those living in different areas of Shanghai can proceed with their registration from the comfort of their own couch.

A larger roll-out of this online service will be implemented gradually across the country.
