It's Finally Beijing's Turn! New Trash Sorting Rules Are Coming!

New regulations on garbage classification in Beijing are under way!

On October 14, an amendment to the Beijing Municipal Household Waste Management Regulations (draft) was submitted for public access and feedback. The period to share comments will end on November 13.

There are four household garbage categories listed in Beijing, which have been broken down from "hazardous waste" and "other waste" into kitchen waste, recyclables, hazardous waste and other waste.

Anyone who fails to sort out their trash properly will be subject to an RMB 200 fine, which will also affect their social credit score.

How will this affect organizations?

1. Food and beverage providers

Businesses offering disposable tableware, such as packaged chopsticks and plastic spoons, can be fined up to RMB 5,000.

The draft is clear in its submission:

Food and beverage service providers as well as delivery service providers will be given a short period of time to rectify their available utensils if those do not comply with the new regulations put forth. Failure to do so will result in a fine of no more than RMB 5,000.

2. Hotels

Hospitality institutions offering disposable items in their rooms and other spaces will also be given a short period of time to rectify their available utensils and daily necessities if those do not comply with the new regulations put forth. Failure to do so will result in a fine ranging between RMB 1,000 and RMB 5,000.

3. Package delivery services

Express delivery companies and e-commerce enterprises are urged to use environmentally friendly packaging moving forward.

4. Society as a whole

Garbage reduction and sorting instructors will be introduced to share and promote household garbage classification knowledge and advise residents on ways to properly sort out their trash.
