When we think of Chinas global economic growth, cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen quickly come to mind. But there are smaller - much smaller - Chinese towns that are quietly crawling their way up to the top of global markets in specific niches.
As of June 19, 2018, China counted more than 2851 counties, most of which people probably never heard of before.
And yet, many of those unknown remote counties dominate the production of daily necessities, from toothbrushes and pet foods to clothing and wigs.
Sexy lingerie town
Guanyun County, Jiangsu
Located in Guanyun County, an agricultural area of northeastern Jiangsu province, this place manufactures more than half of China's sexy underwear.
Not really the most appropriate match of outfits youd want to be known for, but its definitely lucrative.
Lei Congrui, a young man at the head of this organization, had just turned 18 in 2009 when things began to turn around. He set up a factory and brand called Midnight Charm, which brought in over RMB 1 million in their first year of operations.
Lei Congrui dedicated a big part of his attention to the development of his underwear factory, which earned him a net worth of over RMB 10 million.
Town of eyeglasses
Danyang, Jiangsu
Danyang, in Jiangsu province, is the world's largest eyewear production base, accounting for 75% of the country's eyewear production, and 50% of the world's total production.
The city is even rated as a national AAA scenic zone.
Toothbrush town
Hangji town, Jiangsu
The toothbrush you use in China probably most likely comes from a place in Jiangsu province called Hangji town .
It was awarded the title of "toothbrush capital of China back in 2003, and has lived up to its name ever since.
This town controls 80% of the domestic toothbrush market and more than 30% of the international market.
Its even home to the museum of toothbrushes.
Coffin town
Heze, Shandong
Heze, in Shandong province, undertook 90% of the Japanese coffin market, attracting the attention of curious Japanese TV reporters.
Local manufacturers in Heze have had to adapt to Japanese customs in order to elevate their chances of success in this market.
Wig town
Xuchang, Henan
Statistics have revealed that more than 80% of the worlds wig exports are made in and come from China.
And as it turns out, Xuchang , a small town in Hebei province, accounts for half of the countrys total wig production.
These are just a few of many other small, random places around China manufacturing the biggest of something.
For instance, did you know that many paintings you see in places around the city come from Guangdong province?
The Shenzhen Dafen Oil Painting Village, the world's largest oil painting reproduction factory. Nearly 10,000 painters produce over 1 million copies every year. It covers 60% of the global reproduction field.
