Introduction

East China Normal University, also known as ECNU, is an elite research university founded in 1951. A group of several influential universities including Kwang Hua University, Great China University, Fudan University, and Tongji University built the foundation of ECNU through contributing faculty and mergers. ECNU became the first national training university for teachers, and throughout the 20th century built its reputation as one of Chinas greatest universities of education. ECNU has also garnered considerable respect in the fields of social science, economics, and other fields. In 1996, the university joined Project 211 to receive government funding.

ECNU has two primary campuses. The Putuo Campus is home to the universitys Confucius Institute, Chinese language program for international students, and various research institutes. This campus has fewer academic departments compared to Minhang Campus, but some examples include the School of Design, School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, and Faculty of Education. Putuo Campus is particularly noted for its natural beauty including various ponds, streams, and trees. The Minhang Campus of ECNU is neighbored by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and is home to a majority of the universitys undergraduate and graduate students. Some departments at Minhang Campus include the School of Communication, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as the Faculty of Economics and Management.

International and domestic rankings of the school

In the 21st century, ECNU has become a global university with over 3,500 international students annually and 560 international staff members. ECNU joined Project 985 in 2006 to be part of a select group of prestigious universities in China receiving special funding for research and development. In 2011, New York University Shanghai was established in collaboration with ECNU, becoming the first American university to receive independent status from the Chinese Ministry of Education. Additional partnerships have been formed with the University of Pennsylvania, University of Tokyo, and University of Warwick, and among others. ECNU currently has 11 research institutes, 58 departments, and 23 full-time schools. The university is listed by the QS Top Universities ranking in the #531-540 band worldwide and #25 domestically.
