Many people living in the Baiyuan district of Guangzhou and NanBian village have reportedly been catching colds, which have then worsened into a fever and sent them to the hospital for isolated treatment.
Mr. Xu is one of the patients.
He didn't pay much attention to it at first, nor did he think much of it, until his situation became more and more serious.
When he realized that something was wrong, he rushed to the hospital for examination.
When the results came out, he found out that he had contracted the dengue fever.
Emergency notices have been posted on the walls of almost every residential building, warning residents that the dengue fever has been spreading within the community. It is typically a disease of urbanized areas, where the mosquitoes find breeding opportunities in small water collections in and around houses: drinking water containers, discarded car tyres, flower vases and ant traps are well-known breeding places.
Symptom
Dengue is a mosquito-borne, potentially fatal disease that mainly affects people in tropical and subtropical regions, causing fever, and nausea, as well as muscle and joint aches.
In some cases, the Dengue fever is asymptomatic which means that those who have been infected by the virus may not exhibit symptoms.
Those with symptoms get ill between 4 to 7 days after the initial bite. The infection is characterized by flu-like symptoms which include a sudden high fever coming in separate waves, pain behind the eyes as well as muscle, joint, and bone pain, severe headache, and skin rash with red spots. Treatment includes supportive care of symptoms. There is no antiviral treatment available.
Prevention
Travelers should take meticulous measures to prevent mosquito bites during the day.
1. Use a repellent containing 20%-30% DEET or 20% lcaridin on exposed skin. Re-apply according to the manufacturer's directions.
2. Wear neutral-colored clothing (beige, light grey) . If possible, wear long-sleeved, breathable garments.
3. If available, pre-soak or spray outer layer clothing and gear with permethrin.
4. Get rid of water containers around dwellings and ensure that door and window screens work properly.
5. Apply sunscreen first, followed by the repellent (preferably 20 minutes later).
