100 Routes, 2,185 Kilometres

On October 25, Shanghai released the “Hudu 100 · Walking Shanghai” network. The 100 routes cover about 2,185 kilometres and connect 690 rural resource points across the city.

The routes are organised at three levels: 10 city-level routes of roughly 50–100 kilometres, 30 district-level routes of 10–50 kilometres, and 60 town-level routes of 5–10 kilometres.

The published examples include the Songjiang Nine Peaks route, the Dianshan Lake–Zhujiajiao water-town route, the Chongming Ring Island countryside route and the Baoshan Wusong River cultural route. The programme also includes the “Crossing Gangshen” line, a long route of about 150 kilometres, and the shorter Qingxi countryside wetlands route near Qingpu for a slower day outdoors.

From City Walk to Country Walk

The network offers four difficulty levels — leisure, beginner, challenge and extreme — and themes including local history, farming landscapes, water towns, ecology, cycling and family learning.

Some routes are short and almost flat, while others are designed as long-distance journeys. One route following the ancient “Gangshen” landform stretches for about 150 kilometres and traces the geological history of the Shanghai region.

How the Routes Were Built

The project was developed with support from 10 universities, 50 teams of planners, architects and landscape designers, and international design institutions. Their research covered nine rural districts and 108 towns.

The route network was built from research on 148 landscape areas, 196 characteristic villages, 522 historic bridges, 75 distinctive farmland areas and 1.56 million public check-in records.

The organisers describe the project as more than a list of walks. Participants can submit their walking track, photographs and suggestions about transport connections, rest areas, signs and facilities. A stamp-collection challenge is also available through the “Hupai Jiangnan Walk” WeChat account.
