A missing smartphone, two honest tourists and a humorous video message have turned a brief encounter in Nanjing into a heartwarming story about everyday kindness in China.

A young woman from Hubei Province, central China, recently lost her newly purchased smartphone while visiting Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. She got it back in less than five minutes, but the biggest surprise came later, when she discovered a short, humorous video recorded by the strangers who had found it.

According to Hubei Daily, the incident happened on October 5, the final day of a holiday trip taken by Sun, a woman from Sanya, Hainan Province, and her boyfriend, Huang. After visiting the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, the couple planned to rent shared bicycles to continue their journey. Instead, they noticed a smartphone stuck in the holder of one of the bicycles.

Rather than leaving it behind or taking it with them, the couple decided to hand it over to the police. Before doing so, however, they noticed that the phone could record video even while its screen was locked. They decided to leave a short message for its owner.

“Your phone is on the shared bicycle, you forgetful person! Is this a new one? We've handed it over to the police! Don't buy us duck wings as a thank-you gift — we don't eat them!” they joked in the recording.

The reference to duck wings had a simple explanation: friends had recently bought the couple some of Nanjing's local duck-wing snacks, so they included the food in their playful message.

Meanwhile, the phone's owner, identified by the pseudonym Xiao She, noticed it was missing just two or three minutes after losing it. When she returned to look for the device, she discovered that someone had already ridden away on the bicycle.

Worried, she borrowed a friend's phone and called her own number. To her surprise, a police officer answered. The couple had already brought the device to the police, making the reunion possible in less than five minutes from the moment it was lost. After confirming her identity, the police returned the phone safely to its owner. She thanked both the officers and the couple for their help.

The story did not end there. While checking her photo gallery, Xiao She discovered the strangers' video and decided to share the unexpected encounter online. Within a day, she managed to contact Sun and Huang.

Touched by their honesty and sense of humour, she said she planned to send them Zhou Hei Ya duck products from Hubei, along with other local specialties, as a gesture of appreciation.

The story attracted praise online, with many people applauding the couple for doing the right thing and the Nanjing police for helping reunite the owner with her phone.
