Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale in China on October 23. Just days later, several early users posted complaints about cracked inner screens.
One Australian user said the phone developed a problem only about six hours after delivery. He had opened it fewer than 20 times when he noticed something unusual near the hinge while showing the phone to a friend.
He then heard a clear cracking sound. A crack appeared along the folding area of the inner display.
The user said there were no visible signs that the phone had been dropped, squeezed or hit. He later visited an Apple Store, where the device was replaced.
Other users have also shared photos of cracked screens online. However, the reports currently come from individual consumers, and there is no evidence that all iPhone Duo devices are affected.
Repair Costs Are Also Drawing Attention
According to Apple’s published service information, repairing the inner screen outside the warranty period is estimated to cost RMB 7,998 for customers without AppleCare+. With AppleCare+, the service fee for accidental damage is listed at RMB 628.

The complaints appeared as the phone’s launch excitement began to cool. iPhone Duo buyers initially faced limited supply and high resale prices, but some resale channels reportedly began offering the device below its official price only two days after launch.
For many consumers, the discussion is now less about whether Apple has finally made a foldable phone and more about whether the first generation is durable enough for everyday use.
Foldable phones are exposed to repeated stress at the hinge and display. That makes early user feedback especially important for buyers considering a device that starts at a premium price.
Apple has not announced a large-scale recall or confirmed a widespread defect. For now, the reported cases remain individual complaints under investigation.
