Chinese Job Seeker Gets 1,000 RMB After Rejection – 'A First in 10 Years,' He Says

When Zhang applied for a job at a company in Chongqing, he did everything asked of him. He completed a full project proposal, put in serious effort, and submitted it on time.

He didn't get the job.

But that night, something unexpected happened. The company transferred 1,000 yuan to his account. The message read: "Thank you for your effort. This is for your time and transportation – we respect the time and energy you put in."

For Zhang, who has worked in advertising for ten years, this was a first.

"Over the years, I've been asked to write proposals and come up with ideas in countless interviews. Most of the time, they just disappear into thin air – or worse, companies take your ideas and use them without paying," he said"This is the first time I've ever received anything after being rejected. It really felt like respect."

Two Reactions Online

The story quickly went viral, with many praising the company for showing basic respect to job seekers.

But others were skeptical. Some argued the company was using a "small payment to get big results" – pointing out that the proposal itself might have already saved the company hundreds of thousands of yuan, making 1,000 yuan a cheap price to pay.

Zhang responded to those comments directly: "I have ten years of experience. This is genuinely the first time I've seen a company do this. I'm not promoting them – just sharing something that actually happened."

He also declined to name the company when asked by reporters, saying: "I don't want people to think this is an ad."

The Company's Response

The company's founder, Mr. Wu, told reporters that he was surprised by the attention. He explained that Zhang's ideas matched the company's direction, but after reviewing his proposal, they realized there were differences in execution. They decided not to hire him.

"But he respected my request and put real thought into it. Respect goes both ways – so I had to respect him too," Wu said.

When asked about accusations that the company was "mining ideas" from candidates, Wu responded:

"If a proposal is that good, it needs the person who created it to make it work. A single proposal won't sustain a business. We're not in the business of stealing ideas – we're in the business of hiring the right people."

He emphasized that the 1,000 yuan was simply a gesture of respect – nothing more.

For Zhang, the 1,000 yuan wasn't just money. It was a sign that someone actually recognized the effort he put in. "It's not a lot," he said. "But it's the thought behind it that matters."
