A 25-year-old Chinese graduate student was found dead at her lecturer's home in South Korea. The suspect, a Chinese man in his 30s, confessed to killing and dismembering her after an alleged dispute.

The case took a disturbing turn after police arrested a Chinese man in his 30s, surnamed Jeong, who reportedly later confessed to killing the student and dismembering her body.

The victim, referred to as “Wenwen,” a pseudonym used by Chinese media, was a graduate student living in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province.
On Aug. 14, She had returned to China during her summer break before flying back to South Korea. On Aug. 20, She was reportedly scheduled to attend her graduation ceremony. However, Wenwen suddenly lost contact with her family and acquaintances on the day of the ceremony.
The following evening, at around 7 p.m., Jeong reported her missing to police. He identified himself as Wenwen’s boyfriend and told investigators that she had said she was going to Daegu, about 15 kilometers from Gyeongsan. According to Jeong, he later tried to contact her but could not reach her.
Police initially questioned Jeong as a witness. Then, investigators reportedly noticed inconsistencies in his statements, which causes suspicion to shift toward him.
According to Yonhap News Agency, CCTV footage showed Jeong and Wenwen entering his residence together on the afternoon of Aug. 20. Police said the footage did not show Jeong forcibly dragging her into the residence.

Afterward, however, Jeong allegedly left the residence wearing the woman’s clothes and a hat, apparently attempting to make himself appear to be Wenwen. He then reportedly went to Dongdaegu Station. During a certain period, the Wenwen’s phone was switched off.
On Aug. 25, police arrested Jeong on suspicion of murder on a street in Gyeongsan at 7:29 p.m.

Investigators then searched his residence, and they found Wenwen’s body which is subsequently revealed another connection between the two.
On August 26, Police and university officials said that Jeong was not only acquainted with Wenwen but had worked as a lecturer who taught courses attended by her. A post circulated in a local Chinese student community reportedly described Jeong as friendly with students and said that he was acquainted with Wenwen, indicating that the two had known each other before her disappearance.
As investigators pieced together the final days of Wenwen’s life, more disturbing details emerged.
On Aug. 27, reports said Jeong had confessed during police questioning to killing Wenwen and dismembering her body. He allegedly told investigators that he did not dispose of the remains in one place, but instead scattered them across different locations, including Gyeongsan and areas farther away in Gyeonggi Province.
During questioning, Jeong reportedly claimed that he and Wenwen were romantically involved. He allegedly said that Wenwen had asked him to marry her and that the two later became involved in a dispute. According to his account, he killed her in what he described as a “moment of impulse” following the argument.
But Wenwen’s family has strongly disputed this explanation. Her sister told Red Star News that the family found Jeong’s account difficult to believe. She said their father was seriously ill and that Wenwen had always been very filial, making it unlikely that she would suddenly decide to remain in South Korea.
More importantly, her sister said Wenwen had already booked a flight back to China. “If she really wanted to marry him, why had my sister already bought a ticket to return to China?” she said, questioning the suspect’s version of events.
“No matter what the reason was, it cannot be used as a reason for murder,” her sister said, calling for a severe punishment for the person responsible.
Authorities are expected to question Jeong further before seeking an arrest warrant. The case remains under investigation.
