Flight Bookings Up 1240%! Why Europe Is Flocking to China for Summer Escape
While China has just entered its hottest stretch of summer, an unexpected travel trend is emerging: international tourists are booking flights to the country in record numbers.
Official data shows that in the first half of this year, 22.9 million foreign nationals entered China, marking a 20.4% increase compared to the same period last year. But the real standout number comes from flight data—tickets from Finland to China have surged by 1,240%, while Greek tourist numbers have nearly tripled.
So, what’s drawing them here?
1. Beyond Beijing and Shanghai: The New Hotspots
It's not just the usual suspects—while the Forbidden City and the Bund remain popular, the real growth is happening in secondary cities. Since June, international arrivals at Shenzhen Airport alone have jumped 31.6% for European travelers.
But the bigger shift is westward and northward. Flight bookings to Yining in Xinjiang and Nyingchi in Tibet are up more than six times year-on-year. Meanwhile, cities like Datong, Yiwu, Jiamusi, and Dunhuang have all seen their foreign visitor numbers double.
2. Theme Parks Go Global with AI Translators
Summer heat is pushing tourists indoors—and into theme parks. One major Shenzhen theme park launched a summer water-splashing festival in late June, drawing thousands of weekend visitors, including a 50% year-on-year increase in foreign guests.
To handle the influx, parks have rolled out multilingual ticket machines and AI-powered translation earpieces, allowing visitors from around the world to enjoy shows and attractions without language barriers. Tour groups of 200 to 300 people are now common on weekdays, jumping to 500 on weekends.
3. Huaqiangbei: The Shopping Magnet You Didn't Expect
Forget luxury goods. The hottest items for European tourists right now are cooling gadgets.
At Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei—the city's famous electronics district—portable spray fans and cooling towels are flying off the shelves. French traveler Joselyne told us she made Huaqiangbei her first stop in China, specifically to buy a high-tech portable fan after researching it online.
Walk through Huaqiangbei on any summer evening, and you'll see foreign tourists sipping iced drinks while testing out their new gadgets—a scene that has turned this former wholesale electronics hub into a trending check-in spot on overseas social media.

From Business Trips to Leisure Getaways
Hotels are noticing a major shift in their guest profiles. According to a vice president at Shangri-La Group, Shenzhen used to be known primarily as a business travel destination for foreigners. This summer, however, the majority of international guests are leisure travelers—and their priorities have changed. They're less interested in just a bed for the night and more focused on immersive local dining and cultural experiences.
With smoother mobile payment options, easier visa policies, and tax refund schemes now in place for shoppers, the "China Travel" buzz is only getting louder. And this summer's inbound tourism surge is yet another sign that China's appeal as a global destination keeps growing—especially when temperatures back home are rising even faster.
