For many entrepreneurs, success comes from mastering a winning formula. For James Guo, Founder and CEO of Vlion Network and CEIBS Global EMBA 2023 alum, the next stage of his company’s growth began by recognising that the same formula would not work everywhere.

After founding Vlion, James accumulated almost a decade of experience scaling the business from a startup into a serious China-based player. Yet as his ambitions shifted towards international markets, he realised that technical expertise and entrepreneurial instinct alone would not be enough.

To become a leader of a company with global ambitions, he needed a broader perspective, a more systematic approach to management, and a deeper understanding of how business is conducted across various cultures. That realisation led him to apply to join the Global EMBA 2023 cohort.

Building a business with global ambitions

James founded Vlion Network in 2014 with a strong technical foundation in algorithm engineering. The company developed a technology platform that efficiently connects advertisers with publishers through performance-based marketing, working with many of China's leading ecommerce companies and earning commissions based on successful transactions.

Over the following decade, James experienced every stage of entrepreneurial growth.

"After managing a startup and growing the company for more than ten years, I had developed strong ideas about how to grow a business from RMB 1 million to RMB 1 billion," he says. "I had accumulated a great deal of knowledge and experience, but it wasn't systematic."

As the company matured, international expansion became the next strategic priority. However, James quickly discovered that success in China's intensely competitive digital marketplace did not automatically translate overseas. Beginning in 2019, Vlion expanded into Southeast Asia and Africa. Its first two serious attempts were unsuccessful.

"We tried to transplant the same technical platform that had worked so well in China," James explains. "But the technical protocols and market environments were completely different. Simply applying the same business model didn't produce the same results."

The experience fundamentally reshaped his thinking. Rather than viewing global expansion as exporting an existing business model, James recognised that succeeding internationally required understanding entirely different business environments.

When Vlion's overseas business began gaining real traction in 2021, James knew he needed to develop his own capabilities, not just those of his company.

"I saw that the future direction of the business was to become a global operator. GEMBA was the natural choice because I needed knowledge and direction that I couldn't easily find elsewhere. Plus, I live I Shanghai so it made sense logistically – we engineers always love efficiency!” James says.

Speaking a global language that goes beyond the classroom

Although several people recommended that James pursue a Chinese-language EMBA, he deliberately chose the Global EMBA instead. His reasoning extended beyond the curriculum.

"I wanted to be exposed to people who had completely different professional experiences and career paths from mine," he says. "I wanted to understand the different ways of thinking that potential clients in other countries and regions might have."

Throughout the programme, James found himself constantly challenged by classmates from different countries and industries, whose perspectives often differed significantly from his own. One particular module, Strategic Simulation, remains especially memorable to him. During the group project, a classmate openly challenged his decision-making approach, encouraging him to consider not only data, but also broader sources of information when making strategic decisions.

"It was one of those moments when I realised this programme was different," James recalls. "We had developed enough trust that we could speak completely honestly with one another. Everyone wanted each other to succeed, so there was no need to hold back. You don’t often get that kind of directness in other parts of life, but in the classroom, we pushed each other to learn, to listen and to improve."

Equally inspiring was watching the achievements of his classmates as they successfully balanced demanding careers, entrepreneurship and academic study.

"Seeing how quickly they progressed in their own industries gave me confidence that I could pursue even bigger ambitions for my own company," James shares.

Understanding business beyond borders

While the classroom provided valuable insights, James believes some of GEMBA's greatest lessons came from experiencing international business environments first-hand. Having participated in five Global Modules, he says the overseas experiences fundamentally changed his understanding of what it means to operate internationally.

"The Global Modules taught me things I could never fully understand simply by sitting in a classroom," he says. "There is no substitute for physically being in a place, meeting people face to face and understanding how business actually works there."

The Africa Module was particularly influential, reinforcing lessons that directly informed Vlion's international strategy. Today, overseas business accounts for more than 45% of the company's revenue – a figure that continues to grow as the business expands into additional markets.

Having graduated alongside his GEMBA 2023 classmates in April this year, James says they have influenced his own ambitions for the near future. Inspired by his travels and discoveries during the Global Modules, he is now preparing to establish a presence in Los Angeles while working towards a future NASDAQ listing.

"Before GEMBA, I don't think I would have dared to dream about ambitions on this scale,” he insists.

Perhaps even more valuable has been the deeper understanding of cultural differences in leadership and collaboration. James points to his Capstone Project team, which included Chinese, African and German classmates, as a defining example.

Initially, differences in working styles created challenges. While James and his Chinese teammates naturally favoured making rapid decisions and refining plans as the project evolved, his African and European classmates preferred spending more time planning thoroughly before execution. Rather than becoming an obstacle, these contrasting approaches ultimately strengthened the team's performance.

"We learned to appreciate the value that everyone brought to the project," he says. "That experience has become a blueprint for how I approach international collaboration today. Listen carefully, understand different perspectives and recognise that there isn't only one way to solve a problem."

James believes these cultural insights have also transformed the way he works with international clients.

"There was definitely some culture shock at first," he admits. "But over time I learned how to communicate more effectively, understand different value systems and speak the language of global business."

A lifelong global community

For James, graduation marked the beginning rather than the end of his CEIBS journey. He remains closely connected with classmates in Shanghai, actively participates in alumni activities and continues to exchange ideas with fellow graduates across industries.

"We're all invested in each other's success," he says. "We share our time, our expertise and our advice. The alumni community is incredibly strong and enduring."

Looking ahead, James hopes to participate in additional Global Modules, particularly in Latin America, as Vlion continues expanding its international footprint. Reflecting on his GEMBA experience, he encourages prospective participants to think carefully about what they hope to achieve before joining the programme.

"It's important to ask yourself what you want beyond simply gaining a more systematic understanding of business. Be honest with yourself about your strengths and shortcomings, because this is the kind of programme that requires you to engage deeply with it, if you want to get the most out of it. If you can do that, it will help you in more ways than you might anticipate," James insists.

For companies around the world, international expansion has become increasingly complex. Chinese businesses are looking overseas, while multinational companies have a more nuanced understanding of how China fits into their plans in a “China+1” world. In both instances, success requires leaders who understand not only strategy, but also the cultures, values and business practices that shape decision-making across markets.

"The Global EMBA gives you that understanding," James says. "It helps you understand how different people think, how different businesses operate and, ultimately, how you can become a more effective global leader."

Armed with this deeper understanding and greater confidence, James’ post-GEMBA chapter looks primed to expand Vlion Network, as well as the pursuit of more personal projects and ambitions. Doubtless, his classmates will remain an important part of the journey, echocing his cohort's motto: "Together, We Achieve More."
