Japan's Cabinet Office says that the workers suffered swollen hands and other symptoms after chemical agents leaked from cannon shells recovered in the northeastern Chinese province of Jilin on May 26.

It was thought that the workers may have been in contact with the leaked chemical agents on their protective suits.

They were in hospital for several days. The two have already returned to Japan.

During a regular press conference on June 4, a reporter asked about reports stating that two Japanese staff members were injured and hospitalized while handling chemical weapons left behind by the Japanese military in Jilin Province.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning answered that on May 26, two Japanese personnel were in Jilin Province processing chemical weapons abandoned by Japan in China. During this process, a chemical weapon shell was damaged, and their arms were accidentally contaminated by the toxic substance. The Chinese side took action immediately. Personnel at the scene provided medical diagnosis and treatment right away and sent the two individuals to the hospital. After receiving their treatment in the hospital, they were sent back to Japan on May 29.
