A taxi driver in Shenzhen has been penalised after charging a foreign passenger 288.4 yuan (approx. US$40) for a trip of just 1.6 kilometres – a route that should have cost less than 15 yuan.

The incident came to light in early 2026 when a local resident filed a complaint through the “@Shenzhen” mini-program. The passenger, a foreign colleague of the complainant, took a taxi from the Shenzhen Cruise Home Port to the Shekou Hilton Hotel – a short journey that the driver grossly overcharged.

The Nanshan Law Enforcement Brigade launched an investigation. However, the driver, identified as Mai, refused to cooperate. With the foreign passenger having already left China, the case initially hit a dead end.

To break the impasse, authorities reviewed surveillance footage from the terminal, used facial recognition technology in collaboration with public security officials, and secured identification from a representative of the taxi company. The evidence against the driver proved conclusive.

Mai was formally charged and penalised for illegal overcharging in violation of local transport regulations. The case has been cited by officials as an example of the city’s commitment to fair treatment of all passengers – regardless of nationality – and the use of technology to uphold accountability in public transport.
