Through its Cybersecurity Threat and Vulnerability Information Sharing Platform, the ministry has identified active network attacks specifically targeting Apple terminal products. These attacks utilize specialized exploit tools that can lead to severe consequences, ranging from the theft of private data to the complete remote control of a device by an outside party.

The way these attackers operate is quite deceptive, relying on common digital habits to compromise a device. It often begins with a simple SMS message, an email, or a seemingly normal webpage that has been "poisoned" with malicious code. If a user is lured into clicking a link and opening it via the Safari browser, the attacker can leverage vulnerabilities within the system to bypass security measures. Once the exploit is successful, a remote control trojan is planted in the terminal. This allows the attacker to seize the highest level of system privileges and harvest sensitive personal information without the owner ever realizing their device has been compromised.

This threat isn't limited to just a few devices; the scope of the vulnerability is actually quite broad. It specifically affects Apple products—including iPhones and iPads—that are running operating system versions ranging from iOS 13.0 all the way up to 17.2.1. Because this range covers several years of software releases, many users who have delayed their updates may currently be at risk.

To stay safe, the MIIT suggests that all Apple users in China perform a quick risk assessment of their current devices. The most effective defense is a proactive one, which involves checking for system update notifications and installing the latest patches provided by Apple. Beyond just updating software, the ministry emphasizes the importance of digital awareness, reminding everyone to remain vigilant and avoid clicking on unknown or suspicious links to prevent falling victim to these targeted network attacks.
