A local business in Changsha has unveiled a new and daring service today: a fleet of small-street water taxis designed to navigate the city's historic narrow lanes, which are affected by seasonal downpours!
Normal taxi drivers, renamed "aquatic navigators," will ferry passengers along flooded thoroughfares such as Taiping Street and ChaoZong Street, bypassing the usual gridlock that accompanies heavy rainfall.
The service is only active during periods of heavy rain when water levels in the historic alleyways reach a navigable depth of at least 30 centimeters. Passengers can hail a ride through the newly launched app, linked below. See Read More.
Passengers must remain seated for the duration of the trip, and seatbelts must be worn at all times. In some cases, passengers have even started fishing off the sides of their taxis, in order to have something for dinner too.
Passengers can also order a PREMIUM boat option which comes complete with large umbrella and flippers, in case of heavy rain. Passengers are strongly advised to wear waterproof clothing, swimwear and bring some shampoo for rain-based showering during their ride in heavy rain.
*Disclaimer: This service is a pilot programme launched on April 1st. Seatbelt compliance will be enforced by aquatic officers on paddleboards.
