The challenge will take place in Chongming District each weekend until May 3.
Professional sleep monitoring devices will be provided by the organizer, with the snoozer who records the highest sleep score receiving the cash, as well as being awarded the title of 'Supreme Sleep God.'
Participants who achieve 'instant sleep' will also receive RMB2,000, according to the rules. What on earth is 'instant sleep?' we hear you ask. We don't have a clue either...
Anyway, to the rules!
No phones. No doomscrolling your way to dozing. You must face the silence, and yourself.
No talking. Socializing is forbidden. The only communication allowed is the sound of your own REM cycles.
No snacks. That midnight fridge raid-induced slumber is a no-no.
No drugs. Sleep aid medication is strictly banned. This is a natural-born-napper competition only. Big Pharma need not apply.
Each session will accommodate 50 participants, with a registration fee of RMB299. Applicants must be healthy individuals aged 18 to 50.
Tents and beds will be provided at the park, with each contestant competing inside their own tent.
Finally, great news for people who like staring at tents—citizens may observe the event (but are not allowed to enter the competition area).
All of which begs the question—is Shanghai really ready for such excitement?
