The Reading Dog is Back at German School Shanghai

图片

The German School Shanghai is launching a new round of its reading dog program, featuring Coco, a friendly and well-trained dog who is visiting the libraries on both campuses.

The idea behind the program is simple but highly effective: children read aloud to a dog in a relaxed, pressure-free environment. Because dogs respond calmly and without judgment, they help hesitant or insecure readers overcome their inhibitions.

Research and practical experience show that such animal-assisted programs can improve reading fluency, motivation, and confidence, turning reading into a positive and empowering experience.

Reading dog initiatives are already well established in many German schools and play an important role in promoting reading motivation. They complement classroom instruction by offering emotional encouragement that fosters a lasting love of books.

Coco receives regular veterinary care, has completed dog training, and will always be accompanied by her owner. Participation in the program is completely voluntary.

The event celebrated creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving, with teams working together to plan strategies and solve complex puzzles.

This year's competition was the largest in the event's history, made possible by an innovative co-hosting model: Year 5 teams competed at Dulwich Puxi, while Year 6 teams competed at Dulwich Pudong, allowing more schools than ever to take part.

It was a fantastic achievement, reflecting the strength of their maths program and the power of teamwork.
