According to media reports on January 4, a Chinese woman was rescued after becoming stranded while hiking an undeveloped section of mountainous terrain near the Great Wall, accompanied by two foreign men.
The incident occurred during extremely cold weather, with temperatures reportedly dropping to minus 15 degrees Celsius. The three hikers had entered a non-tourist, unmaintained area commonly referred to as "wild" mountain terrain. During their descent, the woman became physically exhausted and was unable to continue. With night approaching and conditions worsening, the group contacted emergency services for assistance.
Beijing Fire and Rescue services dispatched a team to the site. Due to the remote location, steep terrain, and freezing temperatures, the rescue operation was challenging and time-consuming. Firefighters navigated rugged mountain paths, located the stranded hikers, and assisted the woman to safety. The operation lasted approximately three hours before all individuals were safely escorted down the mountain. No serious injuries were reported.
The incident highlights the risks associated with hiking in undeveloped areas around the Great Wall, particularly during winter. While some sections of the Great Wall and surrounding mountains attract adventure seekers, many of these routes lack basic infrastructure such as marked trails, guardrails, and emergency access points. In cold weather, the dangers are further compounded by icy surfaces, strong winds, and the rapid onset of hypothermia.
Safety Reminders for Hikers
Authorities urge both residents and visitors to exercise caution when exploring mountainous regions:
Avoid entering undeveloped or closed areas, especially around historic sites such as the Great Wall.
Check weather forecasts carefully and be prepared for sudden temperature drops.
Wear appropriate cold-weather gear and ensure adequate food, water, and communication equipment.
Hike only on designated trails and inform others of your planned route and expected return time.
In case of emergency, contact local rescue services immediately and remain in a safe, visible location if possible.
Rescue officials emphasize that while emergency services are always ready to respond, prevention and proper preparation remain the most effective ways to ensure personal safety in outdoor activities.
