A ski resort in northeastern China has ignited online controversy over videos showing an instructor carrying a woman guest "princess-style" down a slope as part of a birthday package.

A woman identified as Zhao recently posted online about celebrating her birthday at the Northeast Asia Ski Resort in Shenyang, Liaoning province.

The venue is the largest in the province and has the most ski runs.

In her video, an instructor in white carries her down an outdoor slope as she smiles, holds red balloons and drapes her arms over his shoulder.

Nearby, several instructors in orange held celebratory banners and carried flowers, a cake, a speaker and coloured smoke.

Zhao said she paid more than 5,000 yuan (US$700) and it was her first time trying the service, adding that she has recommended it to friends.

According to Jimu News, the resort's birthday package can be customised and priced by request.

Staff told the media that the birthday package falls under the resort's official "carry skiing" service, where an instructor carries a guest in their arms or on their back so they can enjoy the slope without knowing how to ski.

The service costs 300 yuan (US$40) an hour per instructor, is for companionship only and requires advance booking.

Most instructors are reportedly young men with professional training and coaching certifications.

One coach told the media the service is open to all snow lovers.

"Even non-skiers can still feel the wind, speed and joy," he said.

The resort also offers two-hour one-on-one ski lessons priced by difficulty, topping out at 650 yuan (US$90) per person.

The service has gone viral and sparked a debate on mainland social media.

One supporter said the instructors offer plenty of "emotional value" for visitors and that the service could draw more young people to Liaoning and boost winter sports.

Another said: "It is not that I cannot afford the 5,000 yuan. It is that I am too heavy to be carried."

Critics flagged safety and other concerns.

One netizen asked who would be liable if an instructor lost his balance or collided with another skier, while another said the close physical contact could blur boundaries.
